“A Shining City Upon A Hill”

Bible page illuminated by sunlightDuring the course of this national presidential cycle, we are bombarded with reference to President Ronald Reagan’s phrase of a “shining city upon a hill” and the parallel to how America should/could be viewed in its morality and leadership. It’s interesting to note that a full inquiry to this phrase alludes to Jesus Christ and The Sermon on the Mount, Matthew 5:14-16, and not the democracy of the U.S. In fact, the actual recent historical reference is not Reagan’s at all but a lesser known Puritan figure John Winthrop, first governor of Massachusetts. I took this photo a few weeks ago in my church, the afternoon sunlight irresistible as it fell across bookmarked pages of the Bible—the true light that should function as illumination to both past and present matters of historical and national importance.
